Free transportation for pensioners

Last change: 13.05.2025 u 13:10

Pensioners and persons over 65 years of age are entitled to free transport on the basis of the HŽ Passenger Putnički prijevoz card.

To create a smart card, you will need:

  • a request to create a smart card that you can pick up at a ticket office or download here
  • a certificate of receipt of pension from the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute
  • an identification document
  • a payment of €2.65 for profile/annual ticket.

In addition to the request for a smart card and a payment of €2.65, persons over 65 years of age should show an ID.

Passengers who have a smart card with a profile for pensioners and persons over 65 for 2024 do not need to create a new smart card. The smart card is the basis for creating a new profile and they should take it to the ticket office, where they will pay 2.65 euros for the profile/annual ticket for 2025.

You can submit the application and the necessary documentation of retirement and/or old age at the ticket office or via email besplatno.umirovljenici@hzpp.hr

In the event that you send a request by e-mail, it is also necessary to send a payment confirmation in the amount of €2.65 to IBAN HR9523400091510252920, the purpose of the payment (pensioners free of charge - name and surname), model HR00, and under the reference number it is necessary to specify the date of payment, after which you will be informed about the place of collection of the smart card.

The smart card is created within 7 days of the request submission and is collected at the ticket office where the request was submitted.

In case the user wants the smart card to be sent by mail, it is necessary to pay €2.10 for postage costs. Confirmation of payment to IBAN HR9523400091510252920 (model HR00, reference number: date of payment) must be sent via email besplatno.umirovljenici@hzpp.hr

Based on the Conclusion of the Government of the Republic of Croatia of 27 December 2024, the project of free railway transport of pensioners and persons over 65 years of age continues, which enables them to use railway transport in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the 2nd class of regular trains. The project will run until 31 December 2025.

Retired persons and persons over 65 years of age can travel free of charge by train for the purpose of daily and occasional travel, e.g. day trips, visits to events and manifestations, visits to the doctor, summer trips and other trips.

The implementation of this project also has a social component because its implementation facilitates the financial situation of pensioners and persons older than 65. In addition to investments in railway infrastructure and rolling stock, this project continues to encourage the use of railway transport.
