Assistance to passengers in case of train delays or cancellations in international transport

The Agreement on Journey Continuation (AJC) is an agreement between railway companies to assist passengers in arriving at their final destination in the event of a delay or cancellation, as result of which they have missed the connecting line to continue their journey. Without AJC, passengers would need to buy new tickets.

The Agreement on Journey Continuation, in the jurisdiction of the International Committee for Rail Transport (CIT), is upheld by the following railway carriers:

HŽPP Croatia
Slovenia
MÁV-Start Hungary
ÖBB Austria
DB Germany
SBB/CFF Switzerland
BLS Switzerland
ČD Czechia
ZSSK Slovakia
PKP IC Poland
Trenitalia Italy
CFL Luxembourg
NS Netherlands
SNCB/NMBS Belgium
Renfe Spain
SNCF France
DSB Denmark
SJ Sweden

How does AJC work?

When passengers on an international journey miss their connection due to train delays or cancellations, a certificate of train delay or cancellation is issued by the railway staff.

The procedure of issuing a train delay or cancellation certificate may vary among railway carriers. Here you can find the certificates of individual carriers. You can find more information

A train delay or cancellation certificate gives the passenger a right to continue their journey at no additional cost, with the presentation of the original ticket. The trip may be continued by boarding one of the next trains of the carrier whose connection was missed and for which they had a ticket.

The train delay or cancellation certificate in HŽPP is issued by:

  • on the train: head coach attendant, conductor and passenger transport ticket inspector
  • at the station: passenger ticket office operator and information office worker.

The aforementioned railway staff shall also provide passengers with information related to the continuation of their journey. Here you can download the AJC pamphlet
